- TRANSFER 3.0 NOTES
- ------------------
- (c) 1987, 1988 Jimmy Mac Software
-
-
-
- A. Transfer 3.0
- ----------------
- Transfer 3.0 adds a Transfer menu to any application that supports
- menus. It builds the menu by searching your disk(s) for
- applications, and listing all it finds on the menu. You just choose
- an application from the menu, and Transfer takes you there!
-
- Transfer 3.0 is free, and may be freely distributed. This version
- is licensed to Uptime the Disk Monthly, P.O. Box 299, Newport, Rhode
- Island 02840, for commercial distribution. ALL OTHER COMMERCIAL
- DISTRIBUTION IS PROHIBITED.
-
- Transfer 3.0 was written by Clifford Story of Jimmy Mac Software.
- I've got some more stuff to show you (none of it free,
- unfortunately). Send a disk and a self-addressed, stamped envelope
- to:
-
- Jimmy Mac Software
- P.O. Box 24695
- Jacksonville, Florida 32241
-
- for a copy of the Jimmy Mac Software Sampler. (Or send a disk and a
- dollar, or a dollar and an SASE, or two dollars.)
-
- A(1). Launching Transfer
- -------------------------
- Transfer is a desk accessory; you should install it with the Font/DA
- Mover. It will then appear under the apple menu and can be launched
- like any other DA.
-
- Some applications don't have an apple menu. You can still use
- Transfer, so long as the application has menus. The Transfer FKEY
- is an FKEY that will launch the Transfer DA, whether there is a DA
- menu or not. You can install this FKEY with the FKEY Manager or with
- Resedit. (Note: the DA must be installed for the FKEY to work!)
-
- If an application has no menus at all, you can't use Transfer.
- Installing it with the FKEY will do no good; the Transfer menu will
- be ignored.
-
- B. Building the Menu
- ---------------------
- Transfer 3.0 requires no setup; it will search your disk(s) and
- build its own menu. You should understand how it goes about this.
-
- B(1). Hard Disk Systems
- ------------------------
- If you have a hard disk, you should use the hard disk version of
- transfer: Transfer 3.0 HD.
-
- B(1)(a). Searching the Disk
- ----------------------------
- The first time you use Transfer 3.0 HD, it will completely search
- your boot disk (the disk with system files on it). It does not
- search any other disks. It presumes that your hard disk is your
- boot disk, and goes from there. Thus, applications on floppies will
- not get into the menu. (Neither will applications on a second hard
- disk — if you've got TWO hard disks, my heart bleeds for you...) It
- alphabetizes the application names, and puts them on the menu.
-
- This search can take some time. On my disk, it takes about 30
- seconds. (There's a little dialog up while its going on.) The
- important thing to remember is that this is NOT the way Transfer
- builds the menu most of the time. You might get discouraged the
- first time you use Transfer, and find you have to wait for so long,
- but don't worry — the next time it will be faster.
-
- B(1)(b). The “Transfer Data” File
- ----------------------------------
- Once the menu is built, it is saved in a file, “Transfer Data” in
- your System folder. The next time you use Transfer, it loads the
- menu from this file, without searching the disk. That's a lot
- faster! It can lead to problems, however, if you re-arrange your
- disk — Transfer won't be able to find applications that you've moved.
-
- B(2). Floppy Disk Systems
- --------------------------
- If you use only floppy disks, you should use the floppy disk version
- of Transfer: Transfer 3.0 FD.
-
- Each time you launch Transfer 3.0 FD, it will completely search all
- mounted disks, even those that aren't in disk drives. If you have
- ejected a disk, but a greyed icon remains on the desktop, you will
- be asked to insert it again. Transfer alphabetizes the application
- names, and puts them on the menu.
-
- This search is very fast, because there can't be too many files on a
- floppy disk. (There's a little dialog up while it's going on.)
- That's why it's repeated each time you launch Transfer. There's
- another advantage: you may have different disks mounted at
- different times but Transfer will always be current.
-
- B(3). When to Rebuild
- ----------------------
- The Transfer menu is current when it is first built, of course, but
- it can grow stale. Suppose, for example, you launched
- Transfer 3.0 FD, ejected a disk, and then tried to transfer to an
- application on that disk. Or launched Transfer 3.0 FD, inserted a
- disk, and then tried to find an application from that disk on the
- Transfer menu. If you are using the floppy disk version, you should
- always re-build the menu after changing disks. On the other hand,
- if you are using either version, you should rebuild the menu after
- re-arranging a disk. This includes adding or deleteing applications,
- or moving an application between folders.
-
- Re-building the menu is easy — just choose the “Rebuild Menu”
- command from the Transfer menu.
-
- What if you forget to re-build? Transfer will continue to work as
- usual unless you choose an affected application. Transfer will take
- matters into its own hands, and re-build the menu itself. You can
- then try again.
-
- C. Transferring
- ----------------
- When you choose an application from the Transfer menu, transfer may
- occur immediately, or it may be delayed until you quit from your
- current application. Some applications need this delayed transfer,
- in order to wrap up scratch files.
-
- C(1). Immediate Transfer
- -------------------------
- You can get immediate transfer by simply selecting the application
- from the menu. The application you are leaving doesn't know,
- however, that it has been jilted. You must remember to close all
- open documents beforehand — the application won't do it for you.
- Even if you do this, some applications will leave open scratch files
- behind, and these can only be deleted after you reboot.
-
- Most of the time, an immediate transfer after closing documents
- works fine. I have found only a few problem applications.
-
- C(2). Delayed Transfer
- -----------------------
- The delayed transfer gives the application time to clean up its act
- before you transfer. The transfer won't occur until after the
- application is completely finished. This corrects the scratch file
- problem.
-
- To get a delayed transfer, hold down the option key, then choose an
- application from the Transfer menu. An alert will come up, telling
- you that transfer will occur after you quit. Once the alert is
- visible, you can release the option key.
-
- You can override a delayed transfer by an immediate transfer, or by
- another delayed transfer. Notice that the first application on the
- menu is the Finder; a delayed transfer to the Finder will clear any
- previous choice.
-
- C(3). Specific Results
- -----------------------
- The following applications were tested on a Mac Plus with an Apple
- HD20 hard disk, running System 4.2 and Finder 6.0.
-
- MDS Asm — OK
- Copy II HD — OK
- Copy II Mac — OK
- Disk Dup+ — OK

- Transfer, don't use the application's own Transfer menu to leave it.
